In a year in which Bass Pro Shops’ White River Marine Group had to lay off 11 percent of its workforce across seven facilities in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the company announced a glimmer of good news Thursday afternoon.

White River expects to significantly expand its Bolivar plant, the company said, adding 300 new jobs and doubling the space for “manufacturing capabilities” to 210,000 square feet. The facility is four miles from the existing Tracker plant.

White River said the expansion comes after strong demand for Sun Tracker Bass Buggy pontoon boats. The relatively inexpensive boats have allowed “thousands of families to make memories on the water for the first time,” the company said.

Company founder Johnny Morris was ebullient about the news in a written statement released Thursday afternoon.

“Bolivar is home to some of the finest craftsmen and women in America, and we couldn’t be more excited to showcase their skills and craftsmanship by proudly building more boats right here in America’s heartland,” Morris said. “These incredible boats will bring smiles and years of happy memories to families across North America and in 21 countries around the world.”

The story continues below.

To accommodate the expansion, White River said Tracker acquired and will convert an existing warehouse into a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, as well as construct a new adjacent building. The company goal is to begin onsite production next spring and complete new construction by summer.

Sun Tracker pontoon boats were introduced in 1983, and the Bolivar plant opened in 1988. Dating back to 1978, Tracker Boats quickly became the No. 1 bestselling fishing-boat brand in the United States, and has remained so since, White River Marine Group said.
