If you get a call from Nixa Police Officer Kelly Smith and they start asking you to pay them or be arrested, hang up — it’s a scam.

The city of Nixa put out a news release to that effect Monday, which noted that the city doesn’t have any officers named Kelly Smith and that no legitimate officer would make such a call anyway.

“If you receive a phone call which sounds similar to this, please be aware that IT IS A SCAM,” the release said. “The best thing for you to do is to hang up and immediately call Nixa Police at 417-725-2510 to make a report that someone tried to scam you. We will take down any information or recordings of such scam calls you may have received in which the caller falsely claimed to be a member of the Nixa Police Department.”

BBB warning:  If you get a text message offering $1,200 to join a COVID-19 clinical study, it’s a scam
