Springfield high school football power rankings: district championship

There is a new No. 1 atop our power rankings following district championship week in the Ozarks. 

News-Leader reporter Wyatt Wheeler ranked more than 50 teams in southwest Missouri before cutting the list down to the Top 25 while also including the first 10 teams who missed the cut in alphabetical order.

Among the considered factors in the rankings:

  • Season success
  • Watching the teams play
  • Previous rankings
  • Program success

Note that rankings don’t necessarily mean a Class 1 team ranked higher than a Class 5 team would beat them head-to-head, but the rankings show dominance by class.

Here are our rankings after the district championships:

District championships: Southwest Missouri Top 25

  1. Webb City 10-1 (LW: 2) — Defeated Carthage 42-21. Next: vs. Lebanon. 
  2. Lamar 9-1 (LW: 3) — Defeated Sarcoxie 53-6. Next: @ Mountain View-Liberty.
  3. Cassville 9-2 (LW: 7) — Defeated Mount Vernon 35-13. Next: vs. Buffalo.
  4. Thayer 10-1 (LW: 4) —  Defeated Hayti 52-22. Next: @ South Callaway.
  5. Marionville 11-0 (LW: 5) — Defeated Lockwood 28-21. Next: @ Windsor.
  6. West Plains 10-1 (LW: 8) — Defeated Carl Junction 41-26. Next: @ Helias Catholic.
