May 26, 1943 – November 9, 2020
Michael Munding Carland died Monday, November 9, 2020, at 8:45 pm at the Parsons Good Samaritan Society, after a 10-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 77.
Mike was a lifelong Parsons resident and was born on May 26, 1943, to John K. “Jack” Carland and Lucille (Munding) Carland. He attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School, where he graduated from high school in 1961. Mike was involved in athletics at a young age and enjoyed participating, spectating, coaching, and officiating at a variety of sporting events throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed baseball, basketball, and football as a youth and young adult. He attended Parsons Community Junior College, where he was a member of the football team. Mike played co-ed slow pitch softball as an adult, and later umpired for the Parsons Recreation Commission for many summers. As well, he enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren, and extended family members participate in a variety of sporting events. He was employed at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center until his retirement in 1994 and then worked for several years after his retirement at Class LTD in Parsons. He and Sammye Carol Lee were married in 1962, and they share three daughters. They later divorced.
For many years, Mike was known as ‘Big Mike’ in the Parsons community. He was proud of his Irish heritage and strong in his Catholic faith, and he was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He had a quick wit and an acerbic sense of humor that became familiar to those around him. Mike was a mental traveler and subscribed to National Geographic magazine for many years. He was an avid reader, and he enjoyed collecting stamps, coins, and baseball cards. Throughout the years, he had constant companionship in his various pets, and, often times, the pets of others. He enjoyed bird watching and the outdoors, and his favorite indoor pastime was watching KU men’s basketball with his middle daughter. Later in life, he came to be known as ‘Papa’, thanks to his first grandchild and to those that were closest and most dear to him. He had a huge, caring heart that was filled with love, and he was devoted to his family, which was his greatest joy.
Mike is survived by his three daughters, Michelle Almond, and Susie Carland of Parsons, and Bridget May and her husband Dale, of Pittsburg. As well, he leaves behind grandchildren Lauren, Andrew, John, Donna, Caitie, Paige, Michael, Lydia, and Emilee, and great-grandchildren Grace, Meara, and James. Mike is also survived by siblings Jane Lahey (Mike), John Carland, Susan Campbell (Gary), and Kelly Carland (Linda), and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.
No service is planned at this time. Cremation will take place under the direction of Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Parsons.
Memorials are suggested to the City of Parsons Parks Department and may be left at or mailed to the funeral home at box 942, Parsons. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Parsons Good Samaritan Society and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice for their care, support, and compassion.
