JASPER COUNTY, Mo. – According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, a 27-year-old Webb City man is dead after firing shots at officers before turning the gun on himself.

His name is not being released at this time.

The incident began in Carterville around 2:20 p.m. when an officer attempted to stop a red Hummer that had been reported stolen.

The driver led police on a chase before crashing the Hummer. Authorities say he then exited the vehicle and ran to another residence, accosting a citizen and taking his car keys, speeding west on Highway 171.

Jasper County deputies joined in the pursuit as the suspect drove the wrong way around the roundabout at Stone’s Corner, causing a number of collisions.

The chase continued back east as the suspect crashed near the intersection of Prairie Flower and 171. Police say the suspect then fled on foot and attempted to hide under a tractor trailer on the parking lot of a business at this intersection.

It was then that the suspect reportedly fired at the officers surrounding him.

Jasper County Sheriff Randy Kaiser says he then “…fired a second shot resulting in a fatal self-inflicted injury.”

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers or deputies were injured.

Multiple agencies responded to this incident. Missouri Highway Patrol is assisting in this investigation.
