Race for Springfield Missouri House seat goes to a recount

The race to represent east Springfield in the Missouri House is headed to a recount.

When the Greene County Clerk’s office finished counting absentee and provisional ballots Tuesday, Democratic challenger Betsy Fogle led Republican Rep. Steve Helms by just 0.45 percent of the vote, triggering an automatic review to be held later this week.

County Clerk Shane Schoeller said he expected to start Thursday or Friday and work through Saturday if necessary to have results before the board of verification meets to certify results Monday.

Election workers worked at the University Plaza hotel to ensure space for social distancing while they count the ballots by hand.

The recount is not expected to drastically change the result. If that happens, it would indicate the machines that did the counting were somehow coded improperly.
