June 5, 1949 – November 7, 2020
Beverly O’Neal Swearingin, 71, passed away November 7, 2020, in her home after a brave battle with cancer. She came into this world June 5, 1949, during the baby boom following World War II. She was born to Master Sergeant C.L. “Bus” and Virginia O’Neal in Springfield, Missouri where she spent her childhood. She was a member of the Parkview Class of 1969. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from University of West Florida and went on to receive a Master of Education degree from Drury University. Beverly was employed by Mt. Vernon School District from 1984 to 1992 where she taught special education and became Director of Special Services. She went on to work for the family business until retirement.
As a founding member of Emergency Services for Children in Mt. Vernon, Beverly was board chairperson at the time of her passing. By serving the least of God’s children, Beverly was recognized as Mt. Vernon Citizen of the Year in 2016 and chosen as an American Red Cross/KY3TV Everyday Hero in 2016.
Beverly had many hobbies that she enjoyed with Wilbur, her husband of 32 years. They spent their free time traveling domestically in vintage Model T Ford cars and traveling abroad for both pleasure and mission work. Also, an avid quilter, Beverly was able to apply her favorite hobby to mission work Zambia, Africa where she and friends made and delivered over 1,000 baby quilts to orphaned children.
In 1985, Beverly was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer and was given little hope of long-term survival. Her prayer was to live long enough to see her children grow. God is good! Her prayer was answered, leading her to the University of Kansas Cancer Center where she would receive world class care for the next 35 years. Not only did she see her children grown, but her three grandchildren became her great joy.
Beverly is survived by her husband, Wilbur Swearingin of the home; daughter Amy Leanne Gilbert, her husband Ashley, and grandchildren, Raylan, 8, and Presley, 6; daughter Amy Renee and husband Todd VanGorden; daughter Susan Dimitrijevic, her husband Dejan, and grandson, Andrew, 15; and many other relatives.
Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, Bus and Virginia O’Neal; son David Deckard; daughter Glenda Messersmith.
As a longtime member of Mt. Vernon Church of Christ, Beverly faithfully served in benevolence and most church activities. With faith fully grounded in Jesus the Son of Man and the Son of God, Beverly has made the transition to that mansion in her Father’s house.
A visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ. Burial will follow at the White Chapel Cemetery in Springfield.
