Springfield Public Schools parents can help with superintendent search

To shape the search for Springfield Public Schools’ new superintendent, the district will send a survey to staff, students and parents this week.

Next week, a series of community input sessions — in-person and virtual — have been scheduled.

Superintendent John Jungmann recently notified the board of plans to retire from public schools on Aug. 31, 2021. The board has since hired executive firm GR Recruiting to lead a national search for his replacement.

“We deeply value the feedback from those we serve and listening to our district and community is incredibly important,” said Alina Lehnert, president of the board, in a news release.

“These public meetings will help shape the search for our district’s next leader and we look forward to engaging with our district’s stakeholders in a meaningful way.”

The final decision on hiring the superintendent rests with the board.

Springfield teachers, support staff, students, parents, community partners and taxpayers are encouraged to participate in the process.

A series of input sessions have been scheduled for Nov. 17-18. The district asks people to pick the time, day and format that works best for them.

In a recent meeting, the executive search firm outlined a likely schedule for the search.

Following the community input process, the firm plans to start the advertising for the job and managing the application process.

The firm tentatively plans to screen applicants and check references in February before interviews take place. A new superintendent could be named in mid-March.
