Portland Elementary demolished to make way for Jarrett Middle School

A demolition crew has started dismantling Portland Elementary to make way for a new Jarrett Middle School.

At $41.54 million, Jarrett is the most expensive project in the original $168-million bond issue approved by voters in April 2019.

The amount includes nearly $100,000 to demolish Portland, work that is expected to continue for weeks.

Once complete, construction of a new 725-student Jarrett will begin on Portland’s 10-acre campus, located at 906 W. Portland Ave. The fate of the existing Jarrett building at 840 S. Jefferson Ave. has not been decided.

A demolition crew uses heavy equipment to tear down Portland Elementary on Monday, Nov. 9, 2020, to make way for a new Jarrett Middle School. The $41.54 million project is part of a bond issue approved by voters in April 2019.

As part of the bond issue, Delaware Elementary was rebuilt and Sunshine Elementary was renovated and expanded to absorb students who were previously zoned to attend Portland, which will cease to exist.

The school board voted in late September to award the construction bid for the Jarrett project to Branco Enterprises.
