Beloved Springfield volunteer dies of coronavirus

Melinda Welch’s hair and make-up were always on point, friends say, and she wore a sweet smile and spoke kind words to everyone who crossed her path.

“But she was also a badass,” said Jennifer Cannon, founding member of Gathering Friends. “She didn’t raise her voice, but her words became very sharp when she felt like somebody had done us wrong, done her wrong, or done one of our friends wrong.”

Gathering Friends, a grass-roots group of advocates who help the homeless community, was one of several nonprofit organizations that Welch volunteered with and supported.

“Melinda was the ultimate in multi-tasking talent. Need homegrown cucumbers for 200 tomorrow? No problem. Sheet cake for 100 — you got it,” Cannon wrote. “Break up that fight — oh, Melinda’s already over there. Nurse that wound — absolutely. Need a friend? She’s your gal.”
