Missouri Republican attack ads flow into close east Springfield race

People on Springfield’s east side have seen a lot about Betsy Fogle lately — much of it less than flattering.

With Election Day in sight, Missouri Republicans are flooding the 135th House District with attack ads seeking to undermine Fogle’s challenge to Republican incumbent Steve Helms.

The ads themselves are more or less standard fare, spinning grains of truth into claims that Fogle, a mild-mannered public health worker, is a shameless radical hellbent on booting people off their health care plans, passing a job-killing tax hike, and defunding the police.

(Fogle says she will not do any of those things.)

But the money is something else: State filings show the House Republican Campaign Committee has spent more money against Fogle than any other Missouri Democrat this cycle — $131,851.98 as of Monday.

HRCC executive director Jonathan Ratliff cast the activity as standard for a competitive race with a “great incumbent” like Helms the party wants to bring back “to continue the good work he’s done for the people of the 135th.”

But the 135th isn’t just competitive; it’s one of the toughest districts in the state.

Republicans have held the district, which generally covers the area between National Avenue and U.S. 65 from Kearney Street south to Battlefield Mall, since 2013.

But their margins have been shrinking.

Rep. Crystal Quade, the only incumbent Springfield Democrat, sees the onslaught of negative ads as a sign Republicans know they’re in trouble.
