If you have a question, Steve Pokin wants to hear it.
Answer Man: What is the purpose of the new building at 1900 E. Division St.? I don’t see any signage?
I have to admit, I don’t know who asked me this question. I had the name but I lost it.
I diligently keep notes on all the Answer Man questions I receive. But in recent weeks my major focus here in the newsroom has been on an investigative series that is currently running in the paper.
Someone asked me the question about the building recently; I jotted it down and dove back into my investigative project; and only after I found the answer did I realize I can’t find my notes on who asked it.
Anyway, you know who you are, and thanks for the question.
I drove to the building Thursday.
Yes, as I was told, there is no signage on the exterior.
There is no signage on the entry door, either — other than a notice that anyone who enters has to wear a mask.
The lack of signage and apparent secrecy reminded me of a similar Answer Man story I did years ago in which there was a different building in Springfield. I discovered it was the local office of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
On Thursday, the door was unlocked and I walked inside the one-story building. There was a receptionist. Still, no signage.
More from the Answer Man:
I’m thinking at this point this might be a satellite office for the CIA.
No, instead, it’s a state office and the people here make the determination on who qualifies for Social Security disability.
The building is new and the office opened in February. The prior office had been near the intersection of Campbell Avenue and Sunshine Street.
The person who gave me the information about the building and its purpose said I should actually get it from her boss; the boss then told me I should actually get it from a public information officer in Kansas City, who, of course, did not return my call by deadline.
