Prosecutors say a Springfield man assaulted a woman by refusing to let her out of the car and then purposefully crashing into a boulder.
Roberto Worthington, 20, was charged Sunday with four felonies including kidnapping and first-degree domestic assault after authorities say the victim suffered a broken leg in the crash.
According to a probable cause statement in the case, the Springfield Police Department asked the Greene County Sheriff’s Office for help Sunday morning finding a red Pontiac Grand Am that was possibly involved in an abduction.
High speed chase exceeded 100 mph while a passenger called 911
A deputy spotted the vehicle near Kearney Street and West Bypass and started chasing it, according to the statement.
The statement says the driver of the Pontiac — later identified as Worthington — drove away at speeds over 100 mph while the deputy pursued.
During the pursuit, a woman who was in the car with Worthington called 911 and said Worthington was going to crash the vehicle.
Near the intersection of Quarry Road and Farm Road 94 in Willard, the statement says Worthington drove through a metal gate into Conco Quarries, then left the roadway and crashed into a large boulder.
The statement says Worthington received treatment for some injuries related to the air bag going off, while the woman in the vehicle suffered a broken leg and an unknown injury to her back.
The woman later told authorities that she had let Worthington borrow her vehicle and then she asked for it back on Sunday morning, so they met up at a church parking lot.
The statement says Worthington and the woman then started driving around together in her car and he would not let her out.

In an interview with law enforcement, Worthington allegedly said he did not mean to crash the car but he panicked when he saw deputies were chasing him.
Worthington is being held in the Greene County Jail on $50,000 bond and does not have an attorney listed for this case.
The kidnapping and domestic assault charges carry possible life sentences. The other charges he is facing are resisting arrest and tampering with a motor vehicle.
