A registered sex offender is facing new charges in Greene County after a girl came forward this year to report being abused by him several years ago.
Russell Burks, 49, was charged last week with first-degree statutory sodomy.
According to a probable cause statement, the victim in this case told an interviewer at Springfield’s Child Advocacy Center in February that Burks had sexually abused her sometime between 2013 and 2015 when she was about 7 or 8 years old.
The girl allegedly said she was watching TV on the couch with Burks when he sexually assaulted her.
Burks has been required to register as a sex offender since the 1990s, when he was convicted of statutory rape in a case involving a 15-year-old victim.
Prosecutors say Burks also has a conviction for failing to register as a sex offender. He faces a potential life sentence if convicted in this new case.
Online records indicate Burks was released on bond in this case. His attorney declined to comment for this report.
