A man was killed after a tow truck driver struck him Saturday night, police say.
Alan Goodkin, 29, was operating a 2017 Ford F-650 tow truck belonging to Affordable Towing on the northbound shoulder of US Highway 65 just north of the Chestnut Expressway overpass, according to a news release from Springfield Police Department.
Goodkin was there to load a 2007 Pontiac Solstice owned by 63-year-old Matthew K. Canovi, of Brighton. As Goodkin began reversing the tow truck, he struck Canovi, who was reportedly standing on the shoulder of US Highway 65, police stated.
Canovi died as a result of the crash at the scene, according to the news release. Goodkin was not injured.
Police responded to the call at 9:24 p.m. May 2, and have notified next of kin. The investigation is on-going as to the circumstances involved in the crash, the news release stated. Impairment does not appear to be a factor. This is the fifth fatality motor vehicle crash in Springfield during 2020.
