MSSU’s Martin earns 3rd MIAA Player of the Week award

JOPLIN, Mo. – Missouri Southern’s Cam Martin is the MIAA men’s basketball Co-Player of the Week. Martin shares the award with Northwest Missouri’s Trevor Hudgins.

It’s the third time this season Martin has earned player of the week honors from the MIAA.

Martin helped the Lions go 3-0, including a pair of conference road wins against Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney. He averaged 17.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per game, while shooting 49 percent from the field.

The eighth men’s basketball athlete of the week award for the MIAA’s 2019-2020 men’s basketball season has been announced. Missouri Southern’s Cam Martin and Northwest Missouri’s Trevor Hudgins were named with this week’s honor.

For MSSU’s Martin, it is the third time this season he has been recognized as the athlete of the week. He helped the No. 18 Lions to a 3-0 record, including two road wins against Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney, as well as a non-conference win over No. 11 in the NAIA John Brown. Martin averaged 17.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 1.3 steals while shooting 49 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point, and 82 percent from the free-throw line. He had 19 points and eight rebounds in 34 minutes against John Brown then had seven points and 11 rebounds at FHSU. Martin finished his week with 26 points and 13 rebounds at UNK, going 12-of-19 from the field and crossing the 1,000 point plateau as a Lion.

Hudgins of NW earned his first athlete of the week honor. He averaged 22.7 points per game while shooting 63.6 percent from the field, including 70 percent (14-of-20) from three-point range and 12-of-12 at the free-throw line as Northwest went 3-0. Hudgins went 7-of-10 from the field and was 2-of-3 from three-point distance for 22 points in a win against Simpson. He scored 20 points and was 7-of-11 from the field, including 6-of-8 from three-point range in a victory over Northeastern State and added seven assists. Hudgins then poured in 26 points and was 7-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-9 from distance in a triumph over Rogers State.

Notable Performances
Tyrell Carroll – Missouri Western
Carroll paced the Griffons as they won three straight games including two wins in MIAA play. He averaged 16.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game in the three victories, highlighted by an average of 20 points per game in MIAA competition.

Marshawn Blackmon – Newman
Blackmon led all scorers for the Jets with 18 points and 10 rebounds while recording his seventh double-double of the season against Lincoln. In a win over Central Missouri, he again led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds to secure his 8th double-double of the season.

Caleb Smith – Northeastern State
Smith averaged 26 points and five rebounds in the RiverHawks last two games, also shooting 45.2-percent from the field. He recorded the team’s first 30-point performance as he netted 30 at Missouri Western.
